Fresh off the release of, “The Third EP” I was fortunate to spend some time with one of indie’s rising stars, The Magic Gang. The Brighton band were hanging out backstage as they prepared for their Circa Waves support slot at Bristol’s O2 Academy when we met for a chat. So firstly Jack, Paeris and I (Kristian and Gus headed off to eat, “anywhere but Greggs” – obviously life on the road was taking its toll) spoke about Friday’s (24/03/17) release. The Third EP’s lead single, ‘How Can I Compete’, was produced by Hugo White of The Maccabees, whilst the EP was released through Yala! Records, owned by Hugo’s brother and bandmate, Felix. The two Maccabees appear as great mentors for The Magic Gang as they head towards the release of their debut album. For the remainder of 2017, The Magic Gang look excited to dive into a new headline tour before tackling another busy festival schedule. Their successes of recruiting new fans from their support slots with Hinds and Wolf Alice should translate at their festival appearances. As the fanbase continues to grow this year, expect more singles to be released in preparation for a full-length Magic Gang LP – set for an early 2018 release date. After meeting the band, I was able to see them in action before Circa Waves’ headline Bristol Academy show. The Magic Gang’s thirty-minute set flew by as they tore through various tracks from their first three EPs. It was great to see so many of Circa Waves’ following enthused by the supporting band’s set and the joyful quartet were grateful for playing to a well-packed venue, despite the headline band not due to take the stage for another hour. Audience participation was aplenty as the Bristol crowd shouted back the lyrics from the fan favourite, “All This Way” and recent single, “How Can I Compete” – both of which have shared plenty of airtime on Radio 1’s playlists.
